Requirements for a Legal Wedding in Mexico
Documents Required
- Marriage Application (marriage request form) – the hotel's wedding specialist will provide the form
- Valid passports and drivers licences (or official photo ID's) for the wedding couple (+ photocopies of each)
- Original birth certificates for the wedding couple (+ photocopies of each)
- Valid passports or official photo ID’s for the 4 witnesses (+ photocopies of each)
- If the bride and/or groom is divorced or widowed, an original divorce or death certificate is required
- Tourist Visa cards for the wedding couple and witnesses (issued on your entry to Mexico)
- A blood test (name, blood type, syphilis and HIV) is required. The blood test must be done in Mexico by a government laboratory. An appointment will be made to have the sample taken at the hotel. The cost of $200.00 USD is to be paid in cash to the person administering the test
Other Requirements
- All documents, except the passport, must be Apostille * by the authorities of the country where they were issued (if not Mexico). Birth certificates must be translated into Spanish by a certified translator.
- Passports and birth certificates must contain the same information
- The Tourist Visa card must be completed with the same information as shown on the official documents you will present
- There can be no marriage if either party tests positive for HIV
- If the bride is divorced in Canada and her passport is in her ex-husband's last name, she needs to bring an original birth certificate certified by the Mexican Consulate in Canada and translated into Spanish. In addition, the certification and her Tourist Visa card MUST be completed as per the name on the birth certificate
- If the bride is divorced in the United States or the United Kingdom and her passport is in her ex-husband's last name, she needs to bring an original birth certificate certified by an Apostille * in her home country and translated into Spanish. In addition, the Apostille * and her Tourist Visa card MUST be completed as per the name on the birth certificate
- You must be divorced for at least one year before remarrying in Mexico
- Original birth certificates and original divorce certificates will be kept by the Justice of the Peace. THEY WILL NOT BE RETURNED
- Laws and requirements are subject to change in accordance with Mexican laws
- Please contact the wedding specialist if you have any questions and/or concerns regarding documentation
- The couple must leave a copy of the marriage certificate at the hotel before departing
- The marriage certificate, with the Apostille * seal, attesting to the legal marriage in Mexico will be sent (could take up to 3 to 4 months) to the couple at the couple's cost
* When documents need to be recognized as legal in a foreign country, they’re required to go through the Apostille process, also known as authentication and legalization
